A day in the life of Jess Earland

Interiors lover, Furloughed Account Director, & Head of PR at Studenteer

“As an organisation run by students for students, I’m constantly learning from a younger generation, whilst imparting my knowledge and experience on how we can continue to grow and develop our platform within the volunteering community.”

We caught up Studenteer’s PR wizard, Jess, to find out more about a day in the life at Studenteer…

Up with the birds…

I’ve always been an early riser and my alarm goes off around 5.00AM. I’m at my most productive in the mornings and use the time when everyone else is asleep to catch up and plan my day with limited distractions. The first thing I do is make an oat milk cappuccino, write out my daily TDL and read a chapter of the current book I’m reading. Once the caffeine kicks in I go for a walk around Wimbledon Common and catch up on a podcast (I love The Food Medic, Modern Love and Power Hour series’). Around 7AM I either do an Instagram Live workout or a home HIIT session. I find exercising first thing helps start my morning as positively and productively as possible.

I’m responsible for…

I head up the PR team, alongside supporting the Marketing division, helping share the inspirational story of Studenteer through engaging with as many students and graduate platforms as possible to get our name out there.

A typical day looks like:

8.30AM: I log onto emails and review the morning headlines across the UK. Most days there will be ZOOM meetings with different teams across Studenteer, from Charity Outreach to Student Matchmakers to Content Developers.

As an organisation run by students for students, I’m constantly learning from a younger generation, whilst imparting my knowledge and experience on how we can continue to grow and develop our platform within the volunteering community. Whilst most of us have never met our colleagues IRL, we have formed a fantastic team culture where everyone is encouraged to make their Studenteer experience memorable, rewarding and fun.

The best part of my job…

The best part of my job at Studenteer is meeting and working with such a diverse range of individuals who all bring something different to our Studenteer vision. We all work remotely across the country from Bournemouth to Glasgow, allowing everyone to bring fresh and innovative ideas to the table from both a national and regional perspective. This UK wide approach helps build a service to the student and graduate community that is as creative and accessible as possible during Covid19 and beyond.

Before COVID, life looked like this:

I’m an Account Director on the PR team at M&C Saatchi TALK, working in our consumer division who represent brands such as Hugo Boss, EE, Foot Locker and Southern Comfort. I’ve been furloughed since the beginning of April and whilst I have found great comfort in working as part of Team Studenteer, I have missed the hustle and bustle of new business pitches and the exhilarating culture that office agency life provides.

To wind down…

Now lockdown restrictions are slowly lifting, an evening can be anything from meeting friends for dinner & drinks locally, going to my favourite Barre Class at Psycle or simply relaxing at home with a Deliveroo and a big glass of wine!

My Plan B:

Interior Designer. Ever since buying my flat I’ve become obsessed with everything interiors from rattan furniture, to parquet flooring to banana leaf trees! I love learning tricks of the trade, being continuously inspired by some of the UK’s leading female designers such as Rebecca Wakefield of Studio Fortnum, Medina of Grillo Designs and Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby.
